It seems like every time I log into Facebook, another friend has posted on their page the exciting news that they are expecting. The recent increase of preggie friends puts a huge smile on my face. All is not peaches and cream though. While I am elated with the birth of all these babies, my heart is saddened by the escalation of complicated birthing stories. It seems like there aren’t any healthy, normal, run-of-the-mill births anymore.
Why are there so many difficult pregnancies and labors/births? Why are there so many emergency C-sections, because of horrible difficulties? I researched and found that now one out of every three births is a C section. Why such an absurdly high number?
I am beyond thankful that I had a boring, pedestrian birth. I stayed at home with my family, worked through the pain with Jonathan and my doula, Erin, and went to the hospital when Erin and I decided it was time. Levi popped out on a Sunday and Monday we were back at home. I’m not special or better than others. I wanted a natural birth and I had the absolute most perfect birthing experience possible. Every expecting mother wants a normal, healthy birth. But why does it seem like it rarely happens?
When new moms get together birthing stories are almost undoubtedly shared amongst one another. Terrifying stories of early births, scary moments of being rushed back into emergency surgery, and traumatic hospital tales are often shared. These stories are common. Do you find that as soon as a woman tells friends that she is pregnant, they will begin sharing their intimidating stories of their hospital adventures? And when a woman gives birth in a movie, she is always rushed at top speed to the hospital, screaming at the top of her lungs, only to terrify viewers of all ages.
I want to hear a positive story of a baby being born! Where are all the precious stories out there? I have lots of opinions as to why there are so many C sections and difficulty pregnancies. I want to hear your opinion. Moms, Dads, women, anyone, please share your thoughts on this. I would love to read your comments!!!
